In what was a stellar showing for Georgia teams, the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) in Division II opened its season this weekend. Georgia teams in the Peach Belt fared quite well, including Georgia College, ranked #22 nationally and #1 in the PBC, along with the University of North Georgia, ranked #3 in conference. In a stunning upset last year, GCSU bested then #1 UNG in the PBC tournament, only to be put out in the first round of the NCAA tournament while UNG made an appearance in the division II College World Series. This year, it is the Georgia College Bobcats atop the rankings — and they certainly helped to cement their early #1 ranking with a statement 21-0 win in just 7-innings over Paine University (Augusta) on Friday.
North Georgia wasn’t on top of their game this weekend despite taking two out of three from Florida Tech. The Nighthawks dropped the opener and narrowly scraped out victories in each game of the doubleheader on Saturday, prevailing in both high scoring affairs by one run. Young Harris was the only Georgia PBC team in action over the past two days that failed to pick up a win, dropping two games to Rollins.
Other Georgia teams with winning weekends throughout the PBC included Columbus State and Georgia Southwestern. The University of West Georgia – a member of the Gulf South Conference – also picked up two big wins against Augusta University of the PBC.
Most games for Sunday have been postponed due to the impending threat of ice and freezing temperatures.
