“You are entitled to your own opinion. But you are not entitled to your own facts.” – Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan
Facts. Let’s start with a few. I began this article with a cliche and a no-no in educated writing. Let’s be honest though, as this goes on we should erase all doubt on the educated part. Facts. I have a beautiful lady who together (mostly her) ,we are raising a beautiful, smart, foul-tempered four year old. Facts. The good folks who run this website thought it a good idea to let me write for them, they probably are going to regret that. Facts. The Braves Way should no longer be a thing we live and die by in this organization. It is time to do things a new way, well a way that will win championships. Facts.
Growing up in a small suburb of Atlanta, the Braves were my team. David Justice on my wall, Terry P., Smoltz, Glavine, and number 3 on the field but number 1 in your heart Dale Murphy. These were my guys, these were my boys of summer. Being a 6 year old and experiencing these games that meant something, the playoffs that came one after the other were something this town or any other for that matter had ever seen. The next line I am going to write is one of the most spoiled things someone has ever wrote. In those 14 division titles, we only won 1, one, uno World Series. Why? Was it the team? Bobby? Maybe it’s Maybelline. Facts.
The Braves were America’s team in the 90’s. Before the internet went big, before Facebook could pull up Yankee highlights in .009 nanoseconds, we had TBS. You had it. People in Flyover, Kansas had it. Everynight at 7:35pm that music would start and Pete, Skip, Joe, or Don would be there at the end of the intro to welcome you to what you would expect to be another regular season win and another notch in the march towards another division title. Lord I sound so whiny. Come October we were just another team that couldn’t get it done. 13 times though. 13. We had the fan base, we had the storylines, but why couldn’t we do the thing. The thing that turns a nice story to tell your kids , into things legends are built upon. Why couldn’t we put not 2,not 3, not 4, but 5 banners up? The Yankees did it. Facts.
The Braves Way brought us sliver not gold. It brought us homegrown talent we knew. It brought us a few Free Agents that were tame and knew their place was to compliment without any spotlight. It brought us the love of a manager who was more like our old, ornery grandfather than a tactician on the diamond. We loved it. We ate it up. This is the Braves Way. We worshiped a way that constantly embraced failure. Facts.
Here we are, 2018. We have not sniffed the playoffs since what seems the second Fast and the Furious movie. Aren’t they on 49 by now? An outsider runs our personel, a company in Denver, Colorado owns the team, and we just moved from downtown where you can get a hotdog and a stab wound, to Posh Vinings where you can get a free marky mark skid mark pair of calvin’s at Wahlburgers. So do we keep shooting for middle of the road division titles or do we do what we have to do to steal, kill, and mame to get that banner? I choose the latter. Spend the money, get the loud guy thats hits 40 home runs and is mad when his towel isn’t 115.2 degrees after the game. Go get a manager that will do what needs to be done to win, screw if they like him or not. They will LOVE how that banner looks in left center. The Braves Way used to work, kinda. It won’t work now, so stop waiting for 95 to come back around. Get with it. Be the team that spends, takes no prisoners, and cares less what the other teams are doing. Do it. Some team is going to. Why not us?
