10. Max Fried
Fried was acquired from the Padres in the Justin Upton trade with the understanding that he would sit out the following season as he recovered from Tommy John surgery. Once healthy, he played a dominant role as the ace of the Low-A Rome championship teaming 2016. His best pitch is his curveball which he mixes in with his fastball and changeup. His command often comes into question as talent evaluators often struggle to determine if he would be more effective in shorter stints versus being in a rotation. Late last season, he made a strong impression with his successful debut. From there, he went to play in the Arizona Fall League (AFL) where he learned how to approach big league hitters more effectively. With the knowledge and success achieved in the AFL, he come to spring training to showcase his arsenal with hopes of earning the fifth spot in the rotation.
