It was quite an upset on Tuesday night in Gainesville, Florida as the Mercer Bears rallied from an early 4-1 deficit to defeat the number one college baseball team in the nation (and defending national champion), Florida Gators, by a final score of 6-4.
Most notably, this is Mercer’s third straight win over Florida with the Bears winning all three matchups dating back to 2006. In all three games, Florida was ranked in the top 10 (ranked #1 in 2006 and 2018).
Mercer had been struggling heading into this matchup — they’ve been floating around .500 in a conference they were expected to take with ease. From the early going, it looked like their struggles would continue after Florida plated four in the first frame of the night. However, Mercer pitcher Robert Broom would hold the Gators at four in six miraculous innings of relief which featured a career high 12 strikeouts.
Offensively, RJ Yeager and Le Bassett led the charge for the Bears as the two freshmen combined for five RBI’s on the night. Mercer would score one in the first, three in the third, and one a piece in both the fourth and the eighth.
After a long road trip, Mercer comes home with huge momentum as they look to turn things around in conference play. The Bears begin a three-game series with VMI at OrthoGeorgia Park beginning on Friday night.
