I mean really, they outperformed everybody’s expectations this year, in every facet of the game. The new faces coming into their own like Cam Sheppard, and the older guard like Michael Curry helped carry their team to the top echelon of the SEC, which was surprisingly (as well) very competitive across the board.
One change that can be seen, as the roster wasn’t turned over reall at all, was the transformation of intensity and the sheer uptick in effort that was put forth all around the club. The workouts, the style of play, the determination to win- it was as if the switch that controlled a winning culture and drive in the clubhouse was flicked to the “on” position and everything fell into place. Spearheading this approach was the man who leads the team in most offensive categories, senior Keegan McGovern, who lost nearly 25 pounds in the team effort to get in better baseball shape and to become more athletic.
The Coffee County-native McGovern was a two-sport athlete, also playing football, and was lauded as an All-State team member, a Southeast All-Star for team Georgia as well as a GA Merit Scholar with the highest GPA of those in contention. He was the AAAAAA Player of the Year by the time he left for UGA, where he has definitely finished with a bang. McGovern has hit 12 HR in 39 games, including 46 hits (9 2B and 1 3B), 29 BB and only 27 K, in his final year of collegiate ball.
I can’t say enough about the kind of valuable player a team will get of they sign McGovern. My hope is that as a senior, a deal can be reached with Atlanta with a 3rd round pick unless they have someone they really want. Otherwise, he’ll be a steal anywhere after that 3rd rd, whether by Atlanta or the 29 other clubs who’d do themselves a favor by signing him. He would go higher in a weaker class definitely.
