Here we are… the final weekend of the year for regular season college baseball and our final NCAA D1 Power Rankings for all seven of Georgia’s Division I teams. It’s been a season full of huge surprises and big letdowns, too. No doubt, the biggest surprise of the year sits with our #1 team in the power rankings. We look forward to covering conference tournament action next week and hopefully, we’ll have a team to follow through the College World Series. (Please note: these records are current as of 5/19/18 at 4pm.)
1. Georgia Bulldogs (37-17, 18-12)
Just took two of three from the #6 team in the nation, should’ve taken the series with #1 Florida, but settled for one win. They’re one of the best teams in the nation and will surely be hosting a regional after finishing third in the entire SEC. We wondered if the success would be sustainable. It has … and this team is legit.
➡ Last month’s ranking: 1st
2. Georgia Southern Eagles (29-23, 18-10)
Outside of UGA, they’ve been the biggest surprise of the year. They haven’t lost a series in well over a month and they’ve got to like their chances in the Sun Belt tournament… but they’ve got to get through Coastal Carolina first. Dark horse candidate for a regional.
⬆ Last month’s ranking: 4th
3. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (31-24, 14-15)
They’ve pretty much played the way we expected them to… around .500 in conference. The offense exploded for big wins in games one and two of their final series with Duke, including a 12-run inning in game two with the Blue Devils.
⬇ Last month’s ranking: 2nd
4. Mercer Bears (35-19, 11-12)
Biggest disappointment of the year. They were the early favorites to take the Southern Conference crown… and it sure looked like they would, after some big non-conference wins to start the year. They’ve got the second best overall record in the state, but they never could get it done against the SoCon.
⬇ Last month’s ranking: 3rd
5. Kennesaw State Owls (25-27, 11-9)
Losing nine of your last ten doesn’t bode well as you head into the conference tournament.
➡ Last month’s ranking: 5th
6. Georgia State Panthers (25-28, 9-19)
They got absolutely wallopped by Georgia Southern in the final series. They got off to their best start in program history and then the wheels came off when SunBelt action began.
➡ Last month’s ranking: 6th
7. Savannah State Tigers (7-34, 4-20)
They’ve went 2-17 since our last power ranking a month ago.
➡ Last month’s ranking: 7th
