GHSA Day 2: Gordon Lee, Tattnall Square claim championships; Class 7A postponed

Another exciting day of GHSA playoff action is upon us! Despite soaking hit-or-miss rain across the state, we managed to get in three of the four series with the fourth being postponed to Thursday. Four state championship series began yesterday with two winners crowned and two going to a deciding game three tomorrow. In addition, we crowned two more state champions crowned on Tuesday night. Here’s a look at scores from across the state:

A Private: Prince Avenue vs. Tattnall Square – Macon

Game 1: Tattnall Square 11, Prince Avenue 0

Game 2: Tattnall Square 5, Prince Avenue 2

Make no mistake about it — they may have been the visitors in game one, but it was a home game all the way for Tattnall Square as they entertained Prince Avenue in their home town at Mercer’s OrthoGeorgia Park. It wasn’t particularly close as Tattnall Square made easy work of a pretty dominant program in Prince Avenue.

A Public: Gordon Lee vs. Telfair County – Savannah

Game 1: Gordon Lee 10, Telfair County 0

Game 2: Gordon Lee 7, Telfair County 1

Game one was all Gordon Lee, but despite the score, game two was a different story. Dominant starting pitching from Telfair County made it appear as if we were headed for a rubber match. Gordon Lee trailed 1-0 in the 5th inning of game 2 before they released an offensive onslaught late in the game to capture a state championship.

AAAAAA: Pope vs. Allatoona – Rome

Game 1: Allatoona 11, Pope 9

Game 2: Pope 8, Allatoona 4

Game one was a tight, high scoring slugfest to the end. Game two was a low-scoring affair, with the score knotted up at 2 a piece to start the sixth. Pope would unload in the late innings to even up the series at one game a piece. The deciding game three will be played Wednesday at State Mutual Stadium.

AAAAAAA: Parkview vs. Mill Creek – Athens

Game rained out. Games one and two will be made up on Thursday, May 24th at State Mutual Stadium in Rome, an interesting change of location that will mean much longer drives for both Gwinnett teams — and will extend the GHSA playoffs, originally scheduled to end with all potential game threes on Wednesday. (UPDATE: GHSA has decided to move the game to Parkview High School on Thursday, with a potential game three on Friday.)
