GHSA Day 3: Jefferson, Pope win state championships

It was another great night of action in what was supposed to be the final day of the GHSA championships. (Rain postponed two series, which will be played tomorrow.) With three state champions already crowned leading into Wednesday, two more classes were still not settled. That would change on Wednesday night as Jefferson battled Cartersville in the deciding game three of the class AAAA state championship, while Pope and Allatoona did the same in class 6A.

Due to inclement weather in most of the state, all remaining GHSA championship games were moved to State Mutual Stadium in Rome (with the exception of Parkview and Mill Creek, which will play at Parkview High School beginning tomorrow). Here’s a look at the scores from across the state from Wednesday night:

AAAA: Cartersville vs. Jefferson – Rome

Game 3: Jefferson 6, Cartersville 3

This will be a postseason that won’t soon be forgotten by Jefferson. They battled in series after series before taking out the #1 team in the nation, Blessed Trinity, to advance to the championship round. It was a hard fought battle to the end as they would need all three games to put away Cartersville. The Jefferson Dragons, who mostly flew under the radar until their stunning upset in the semifinals, are now class 4A State Champions.

AAAAAA: Pope vs. Allatoona – Rome

Game 3: Pope 10, Allatoona 2

It’s safe to say the score didn’t tell the whole story of this nailbiter. Pope led by a one heading into the final inning before piling on seven in the seventh to finish with a 10-2 victory. They executed perfectly all night long and left as back-to-back State Champions of class 6A.

AAA: Westminister vs. Lovett – Macon

Game three in Macon was postponed due to inclement weather. The deciding game will now take place tomorrow (May 24th) at State Mutual Stadium in Rome.
